Evant was originally established as a settlement called “Langford Cove” in 1855 after its founder, Asa Langford, who established the town’s first general store, sawmill, and blacksmith shop and acted as the postmaster. The name changed to Evant after Evant Brooks, a wealthy Alabama man, purchased a large amount of acreage, which he then donated a large portion of back to the town in order for it to grow. Thanks to this gesture, the town grew as it sold off acres and eventually expanded to include three more general stores, a gristmill, a cotton gin, and even a hotel. According to the 2020 census, Evant has a population of 412 residents.
